Service as Action
What is Service as Action?
Service is an important value in the IB community. Through a commitment to service, each student has the opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of others or in the environment. The MYP sets out clear learning outcomes that grow from students’ participation in local and global service opportunities.
A Commitment to Action
Service as Action
Students in all grades participate in service towards the community through Service as Action projects. They are encouraged to explore their role as citizens, both locally and globally, make connections between the things they learn and their environment, and consider their place in the community.
MYP Community Project
In Grade 10, students participate in the MYP Community Project. As a consolidation of learning in the MYP,, this year-long project engages students in a sustained, in-depth inquiry leading to service in the community and ends with an exhibition of their achievements at the end of the year.
Service Requirements
Service as Action is a requirement for all students in the MYP at CIST and is one of the ways that we strive to fulfill our mission to take action on issues of local and global significance.
In Grades 7 and 8, Service as Action takes place through the curriculum and with the support of teachers. Students in Grades 9 are expected to take part in student-initiated activities while students in Grade 10 must consolidate their service learning through the MYP Community Project. A year-long culminating project for students in MYP schools around the globe.
